Alice Pleasance Liddell was born in 1852. Her father was the Dean of Christchurch College, Oxford, where Alice, with her three sisters and brother, spent most of her childhood.

Charles Dodgson was also resident at Christchurch where he taught mathmatics. He first met Alice through his hobby of photography and the two struck up a friendship which would eventually inspire the "Alice" stories. Dodgson often took Alice and her sisters on outings around Oxford, and many of the places they went and the things they saw found their way into the stories.

All of the Oxford 'Alice locations' still exist and you can visit them yourself. You can even hire a boat at Salters' Boatyard and head upriver in Alices' wake to see the treacle well at Binsey and then try to find the spot where the picnic took place at Godstow Lock.

Some of the main points of interest are on the map below, run your mouse over the place names to get more information.
