The Alice body of work was made while I was in grad school at Rochester Institute of Technology, in the spring of 1999. Each piece was printed 20" x 20", and the work was later scanned, printed, and bound into a little 5" x 5" fold out book. The doll was from a collectible series of dolls that I had played with as a child. The model was all the same girl, gothic and not. The different Alices are to represent the girl finding her true self, comparing herself to a doll, fighting the duality inside her and what people tell her to do, being confused about a lot of things, and ultimately growing up. As far as the iguana- his name was Jupiter and he was my pet. I chose to use him because the texture of his skin was so interesting, and he was a strange and somewhat frightening creature. I shoot with a medium format camera and a macro lens extension so I can get as close as I want to small things. In this work, I was not trying to literally illustrate the story, but interpret it in a kind of surreal way.
