YOU SHOULD BE SO LUCKY!During the Spring of 2001, repeated in July, listeners to the UK dance radio station network "Galaxy FM" were treated to a full-length broadcast of Kylie Minogue's version of "Alice In Wonderland". The surreal show went out between 10pm and midnight, each time on a Saturday night. The Galaxy bosses dubbed it 'Jackonory for the chemical generation'. Kylie played all the parts as well as doing the narration, and a fine job she made of it. It was slightly spoiled, some would say, by the incessant and intrusive synthesiser musical soundtrack which had nothing to do with the story. The production is actually one of DJ Paul Oakenfold's 'Urban Soundtracks' issued as a 2-CD set in March 2000. Oakenfold specialises in remixes and in this case you get a number of remixed songs from a variety of artists in between Kylie's readings.
While they had nothing to do with "Alice" either, at least gave us a rest from that synth! |
ELLIS IN WONDERLAND Here's one of those occasional oddities which, while it doesn't actually have anything to do with Lewis Carroll, it's just a fun thing to do. The LP was released on the Columbia 6-Eye label, catalogue number CL993, sometime during the fifties. It featured jazz musician Ray Ellis and his orchestra and, while I don't have the track details, I imagine that the inspired gimmick of using his name in the title was the only link with the Alice stories. And that goes double for the fishnet-clad Wonderland lovelies! |

Here's a reading of 'Alice In Wonderland' by renowned thespian, Sir John Gielgud. The recording was released as a 2 x CD set on Nimbus Records (a division of A&M Records Inc) in 1989, cat number NI5046/7. There are no other actors, but there's music in the form of "Extracts from Mendelsohn's String Symphonies".
