This "music hall" version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass was adapted from the Elizabeth Swados/Joseph Papp New York Shakespeare Festival production entitled Alice in Concert for which Swados also composed the score, adapted the book and directed for the stage. Starring Meryl Streep and featuring Debbie Allen and Betty Aberlin, "Alice At The Palace" is an entertaining and shrewdly conceived retelling of the Carroll classics with all of the beloved characters -- from the Mad Hatter and the Cheshire Cat to the Queen of Hearts -- given a unique twist by the witty and charming performances of an accomplished theatrical ensemble.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
The Forming of a Company and the Making of a Play.
In 1970 and '71, director and actor André Gregory produced 'Alice in Wonderland,' based on Lewis Carroll's story and performed by members of Gregory's company, the Manhattan Project. Richard Avedon's photographs of the production were published in the book Alice in Wonderland: The Forming of a Company, the Making of a Play (New York, 1973), design by Ruth Ansel, accompanied by text by Doon Arbus. 165 plus pages.
A group of 6 photographs from the production, each mounted to board, signed, dated and inscribed 'For WBAI' by the photographer in ink and with his reproduction stamp on the reverse, matted and framed, were offered for auction at Sotherby's with an estimated sale price of 6000 to 9000 USD. Hmmm, where's my box brownie?
