Modern Technology
August 2011
This group is dormant but can be re-activated if requested. It could run as single presentations to cover single topics should they be suggested.
The group was formed to help members keep abreast of the use of everyday modern technology from Twitter, Ipad and beyond.
The subjects covered this year are listed below. Clicking on the links will lead you to the presentation material on each topic. N.B The pages are designed for Internet Explorer
WHERE HAVE WE BEEN
Blogging - and we now have a blog at http://techphobs.blogspot.com
Digital TV - we know what we need for the changeover; that our VHS recorders will still work; the government assisted installation of Freesat is excellent in poor reception areas.
HD TV - ready or full but your new digital recorder needs renewing.
- Mobile phone Use - now UK catches up with Africa
- Facebook- so intrusive and we don't want it ; but you have an account in case you want to know what your neighbour or your children are doing.
-Twitter- tell the world what you are doing ; essential for organising a party, a flash mob or a riot.
IPod and MP3 players - shut out the world but where does the music come from?
- Ebay- the best recycling tool ever- and the biggest shop window.
- Bluetooth - move your pictures from your mobile to computer; send a wireless message to the next table; essential for delivery men.
- YouTube - watch your favourite video clips; send your family videos round the world. We don't need it but we have an account to show you our group meeting at www.youtube.com (search Harrogate U3A)
- Emails away from home - yahoo, gmail, hotmail, IMAG etc.
Kindle - download and carry 100's of books in your pocket - but Kindle won't read library eBooks (yes eBooks are available through your library service)
- iPhone and Smart phones - Apps and Android. Not sure that we need the spirit level but the satnav helps us to find our way home.
- Skype- but I don't pay anyway- but great for video chat
- Digital Cameras -choose a camera then, never delete a picture
- IPAD - can't afford one - top of my looting list
