St.Mabyn
is situated in North Cornwall, between Wadebridge and Bodmin Moor. J.R.A.
Hockin in his book, " Walking in Cornwall"
describes
it rather unkindly, as having "a huddled, wind-cringing look about
it!"
The village is centred on the grade 1 listed 15th century Church of
St.Mabena and is surrounded by high quality, undulating farmland.
The Allen valley to the north-west contains a number of Cornwall Nature
Conservation Sites.
It's population
increased from 510 in 1971 to 595 in 1991 and 635 in 1998 but is now
down to 560.
Facilities include a post office/shop “use it or lose it!” a pub, a
church, a school, a playgroup, a village hall, a playing field, a green,
a tug o' war team, a garden club, a young farmers group. There far too
many second homes left empty most of the year,
resulting in a lack of support for the local shop, falling numbers at
the local school and sky high property prices!
