Mommina
by Luigi Pirandello
Mommina is the third play in Pirandello’s ‘theatre-in-the
theatre’ trilogy – of which his most well known work,
Six Characters in Search of an Author, also forms a part.
A
company of Italian actors is hired to improvise a play, and as
their relationship with the ‘director’ becomes increasingly
fraught, the actors themselves have to find a way to present the
story of Mommina – one of four sisters, who marries a jealous
and violent Sicilian.
Pirandello’s
creative skill allows the action to move effortlessly between
farcical comedy, and tense, very serious drama - with even a dash
of grand opera thrown in for good measure! The play is directed
by Derek Ross, who has also created this brand new English translation
from the original Italian text, especially for Stage Company Trucco.
An
entertaining, intriguing and thought provoking production of a
play rarely seen in this country.
