Bert Spires had a younger brother named Frederick William Spires, who served in the North Somerset Yeomanry in the first batttle of Ypres in 1914. An account of the battle, by the Commander, 3rd Cavalry Brigade, Major General The Hon J H G Byng, CB, MVO was found in Berts family papers and so a mention is included here. Frederick survived the war and was serving in World War 2 as a Warrant Officer when he was killed by a grenade accident during training in Derby.
