Terri Lee Drag Racing

IAN'S PAGE

Hello and Welcome to my page.

Well I have been told I have to do this page by my lovely wife to put my side of the story across. Which is novel for a women to let a bloke have his say..........

Well I met Terri in January of 1989 at a pub in Cheshunt, Herts where a few car nuts used to meet up for a chat and a beer. I hadn't noticed this beautiful young lady sitting opposite me before and after a while we began chatting and she told me about her Escort Van and 18 years down the line we are still together and she still have the same van today but just not quite as practical for the road as it was then...

The van was nice but I did not like the interior so I changed it. Then we moved to Peterborough and things started from there, the engine was a still the standard 1400 and the gearbox started to play up so what did I do? Put a V6 in it of coarse as you do. But on firing it up it just did not sound right, it did not have that rumble of a V8 so that came straight out and in went a Rover V8. We had some fun with that until we got into drag racing. So we decided to change the van again.

Now we were living in Spalding and we had a workshop which was a first as until then every thing had been done in a little single garage or on the side of the road. First thing was to decide what engine to run, I had 3 in mind the Rover that was in it which would have been the easiest, a Ford to keep it all Ford or a Chevy. After a bit of reading I decided to go for the Chevy which meant a total rebuild, chassis and all. Next was a rule book from the Pod to see what class we wanted to run in and then it was a case of asking people a lot of questions and taking alot of pictures of other cars to see how they had done things. The one thing I found is that it doesn't matter who you talk to they will always give you advice, the problem is knowing what advice to take and what to ignore as at this time I had never worked in the car game and every thing was self taught.

Building the van was a very enjoyable experience but it took alot of BLOOD, SWEAT and a few TEARS, to make it all happen, and when you finally finish it, it is only then that the hard work really starts. You can always do it the easy way and just write a cheque but for me I wanted the challenge and I built it myself. Looking back there are so many things I would do different and building it myself is probably one of them!!!!
