Taikido is a Freestyle Martial Arts Club,
which basically means that it follows an eclectic approach,
gathering techniques from wide range of sources, nearly all
from the far east.
The style is based on three main BUDO
(War Arts), Shotokan, Wado Ryu, Ju Jitsu and more recently
– Aikido. All have their individual strong points and
these we have tried to preserve, whilst making what we teach
more applicable to modern day life. A significant portion
of the syllabus is, therefore, aimed at teaching ‘Street
self defence’, i.e. techniques that will work outside
the Dojo (training hall), where the more traditional styles
are less adaptable.
Having said this, no one particular Martial
Arts style is necessarily better than any other is, effectiveness
is down to the individual having a ‘warrior spirit’.
This is not an aggressive attitude but instead a state of
mind whereby the student becomes very focussed on one moment
of time, now, ready to do whatever is necessary to defend
themselves, with fear put aside for a moment. There is no
specific technique that instils this outlook; it is instead
the underlying theme behind the whole style.
