The Avon Angling Club Avon Fishings- Part One- The Bow Butts- Browns Bridge |

|
This stretch of the Avon is mostly flat pastoral country. Park at the road bridge at Gilmourton and head downstream. The river is narrow here and very clear. Stealth fishing, preferably upstream, is the best method. Greenwell Spider, Pheasant Tail Nymph and Black Spider in 14’s and 16’s do well
The river rises and falls very quickly here and the worm can be deadly in a falling water.
There are some serious fish in this stretch. Night fishing here can be very good. A good cast would be a bushy sedge on the dropper, a Coachman on the middle and that old Clyde and Avon favourite the Duck Tip on the tail.
Heading downstream to the waterfall and on down to Browns Bridge the river becomes slightly wider and rockier. A downstream wet such as the Greenwell, Snipe and Purple or the Endrick Spider would be useful flies. Anglers had some decent fish on this stretch last season with a wee size sixteen Gold Bead Black Spider.
Browns Bridge is a good parking spot and the big Pool there holds the occasional sea trout in the summer months. Kingfisher butcher and Peter Ross may tempt one of these wonderful fish.
