The pond needs to be fairly deep for deep water plants, like some Water Lillies, but you may also want to put in some “shelves” or “ledges” creating a shallower depth for other plants. You may like to include a bog garden, which is a cross between the pond and dry land, constantly moist to accommodate water loving plants and marginals.
