Artist - James Pants Within 12 seconds of popping the disc in to the Bugle's CD
player we knew James Pants' LP was going to be something special.
Theme From Paris opens the LP with dramatic drum rolls and awesome bass
power - think about the first time you heard DJ Shadow's Entroducing,
then times that by two, and your on the right path. Then we get the crunchy drums and futuristic tracking of
Dragonslayer, the electro hip hop soul of Crystal Lite (featuring the
great vocals of Deon Davis), the old skool electro sound of Cosmic
Rapp, the discofied 80's flavoured Jimi Tenor-esque Were Through,
the space funk of My Tree and Prayers For The People, and the
almost Iggy Pop styled My Girl. My favourite track has to be the huge funk fuelled Good
Things (hit repeat and turn it up!), but there are so many other tracks that
you can't ignore. There's the 4/4 bass squelcher that is I Choose You,
the Sa-Ra styled downbeat bliss of Green Rivers, and the soulful
moog funk of Kash (again featuring Deon Davis) to the acidic bass drops
of You're The One and the twisted head nodder of Shower Party. The freak of Jimi Tenor, the infectious oddness of Moodymann
and the synth sounds of Carl Craig make this as irresistible as
electronic soul music gets. Look up Future Funk in the dictionary and you
should see a picture of James Pants. All in all a faultless LP that you
will keep going back to for years to come. Future classic! Easily one of the best things we have heard so far this year!
If you like infectious and innovative music with the funkiest beats known to
man, you need to buy this LP! Rating - 10/10 You’re probably asking yourself: “James Pants - what the? Who
the?” This one man phenomenon heralds from a small, isolated hometown in
Spokane, Washington, where he locks himself up in his garage and makes some of
the funkiest, other worldly genre-defying music you’ll hear this year. But to
truly know the man behind the pants, we have to travel back to 2001, to a rave
in Texas.

Press Release
It was here – while Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf was DJing – when
a sharply dressed young man approached the DJ booth with his prom date in tow to
formally introduce himself and offered to take him record shopping. What began
as a dream prom night to see his hero DJ lead to an internship at the label, and
eventually on to landing the ultimate fantasy and being signed to the roster.
He’s being championed as the “next big thing” by none other than Peanut Butter
Wolf himself, and critics from magazines such as Urb, XLR8R, and
Dazed &
Confused - and of course the itch crew love him too!
James Pants has that “new sound” that appeals to the kids, for sure - but he
also has that little something that makes him appealing to the grown-and-sexy.
With an unmistakably fresh beat, Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence.
He sings, plays drums, keys, and guitar whilst mashing up 80’s soul, electro
boogie, early rap, new wave, & post-punk disco on the gem that is 'Welcome'.
This musically makes James’ music a hard one to categorise. Do you file it next
to the falsetto funk of Pharrell? Or the underground electro of Egyptian Lover?
The answer, of course, is both - and everywhere else in between! Fear not,
there’s enough Pants to fit any style...
