BBE always rule the roost and this is no exception...
Everyone's favourite eclectic beat maker returns with his second single from the hugely successful Sound Catcher LP. The single features the hip hop boogie wonderland track 'Got to Rock', with rap courtesy of West Coast legend Zion I. Remixes courtesy Spanish hip hop maestro 'Griff'i' and new BBE signing 'Aaron Jerome'; his album tentatively entitled ‘Time To Rearrange’ is set for release early 08.
The flip features the sublime talent of Kathrin De Boer (lead singer of the excellent Belleruche on Tru Thoughts). Kathrin’s voice carries the soul of the wind off the cape mixed with the grit of illegal Polynesian rum bars. The single finishes off with J Star’s wicked ‘Watch That Sound’ re work giving us a lush reggae dancehall feel good track.
Got to rock grabs you instantly with a funky intro, before dropping into an superb old school flavoured steppin beats track from DJ Vadim. Wicked rhymes and delivery from Zion I are the cherry on the cake, and the world class scratching ensures this is definitely one for the b-boys. This is distinctly rooted in the golden age of hip hop that I love and it's the kind of smooth hip shaker that will have you grooving from the start.
Got to rock (Griff Remix) is a darker affair that works really well with the vocals. More for the electronic heads, it's a murky grower that has 'future bomb' written all over it. One of those great tracks that works its way it your head until the point where its the first thing you want to hear dripping from your speakers. Buy, play... then play again and again.
Current BBE hero and general man of the moment Aaron Jerome drops a deep broken gem of a remix that the likes of Vikter Duplaix and Colonel Red would be proud of. Keeping the vocals in place, this is great for the more uptempo moments in life when you want to have a little shimmy and you want something fresh. The kind of future music I love, I am hammering this and it just keeps getting better and better. If you check for the likes of the Goya crew you need this release for this track alone.
Black is the Night is an infectious dub tinged headnodder that never lets go of the soul. Kathrin De Boer's unmistakable and sweet vocals grace the track and she reminds me of Erykah Badu in parts. This will appeal to the beat heads that are into the likes of DJ DSL, Fat Freddy's Drop, early Quantic, Me&You, Alice Russell, and of course the mighty Belleruche!
J Star takes 'Watch That Sound' down the path marked 'Dancehall'. The kind of track that is going to work it really well if you drop it at the right time at rootsy loving clubs like Friends & Family or itch, and it has Mr Scruff written all over it. A Bubbling sound system cut that will work a treat every time!
