Scotland Through Russian Eyes

Hi, I am Oleg Matveyev.

I was born in 1959 in Sverdlovsk ( Russia ). Since the year 2000 my family and I live in Scotland. I have an engineering background and a PhD degree in Computing.

I am a self taught artist. Painting has been my hobby for more than 25 years. It was the way to express, with pen and paper, my thoughts and feelings after listening to music or reading books. It was rather visions and impressions than illustrations. In different times it was M. Mussorgsky (Pictures at an exhibition) and E. Greig (Peer Gynt), Rick Wakeman and Pink Floyd, who inspired my works.

As for books, Strugatsky Brothers (Soviet Sci-Fi writers) and Alexander Grin (Russian-Soviet writer, 1880-1932) were feeding my art with ideas. My latest book-related painting is called ‘The Chronicles of Amber’ (after ‘The Chronicles of Amber’ series by Roger Zelazny). The music of Rimsky-Korsakov inspired recently my ‘The Bumble Bee’.

I work in inks on paper (and now on canvas) and oils on 3D stretched canvas or canvas sheets.

Scotland, with its history and picturesque landscapes, inspired the majority of my recent works. Because of Scotland I have started painting in colours.

I am presenting here my works created in Scotland, inspired by Scotland and dedicated to all the wonderful and hospitable people I was lucky to meet here.
