Dick’s 1999 Gretsch
G6129T-1957 Silver Jet. "A birthday present from my wife, Jacqui, I
found this in the USA advertised as 'mint', which it certainly is and
had it sent over at an ultimate cost of slightly more than half what it
would have set her back if she'd "bought British" so to speak.
What on earth it is that the customs and tax people do that is so
valuable as to deserve the money they slap on everything from the US is
a mystery to me. Anyway, this arrived during the recording of the
"Tornado Alley" CD and it turned out to be a very beautiful,
as new condition guitar, which was a relief. Despite the 'space bar'
bridge which has no intonation, it's actually pretty well spot on all
the way up, which I must admit, I can't quite figure out. This is, as
the name suggests, a '57 re-issue and it has the correct, hump-block
inlays. Strangely, the '57 re-issues they're making now have the later,
'thumb-print' type which materialised in '59. Pickups are Dynasonics but
they do sound a little different from the old ones - mind you the
body-build is just a little heavier too, which will contribute. It has a
very clear, ringing tone and a super neck. Thanks, hon!"
