Dick’s (or Jacqui's to
be truthful) 1955 Gretsch 6121 Chet Atkins Solid Body. "This is as
good as it gets in my opinion. If there was only one, this would be it,
hands down. I am so smitten by this thing that I take it out of its case
and look at it most nights before I hit the sack. It's in unbelievably
good shape with barely a ding on the front and a has great big fat,
twangy sound. It's the best sounding of all my Gretsches - if you don't
plug it in it sounds almost like an acoustic guitar, which goes a long
way towards verifying the idea that an electric guitar's sound is as
much in the wood as the pickups. It has apparently belonged to a couple
of fairly high profile American blues players in its time - G. E. Smith
and Jimmy Vivino - and it has Chet Atkins' actual signature in felt-tip on the back of
the headstock. The solid Bigsby arm is in the case. And God is in his
heaven. I must thank my wife for giving me the opportunity to live in
the same house as this little work of art. I love it to death!"
