Dick’s 1979 Gretsch 7670
Chet Atkins Country Gentleman. "I received an email from my chum
Simon at my local guitar shop asking me if I'd be interested in a
Gretsch 7670 as one had just come into the shop. I can't say that
initially I actually was too fussed about it on account of the fact that
these are just about among the last of the original US Gretsch line and
don't really have any traditional vintage attributes attached to them.
They were also the very last of the Chet Atkins models - directly after
this, Chet took his name to Gibson. I thought I'd go and take a
look, though, and I'm so glad I did. As soon as I picked it up I
realised it had that thing. It's simply a beautiful guitar to play
- it has a feel about it that no other guitar I have has - I can't
explain what it is but it's totally unique. It certainly doesn't
feel like an old Gretsch but maybe that's on account of its
Fender-length scale. All it needed was a good wash (how do people
let their guitars get so mucky? - this poor thing was smothered in
layers of grolly!) and it came up almost like new except for the odd
ding here and there. It taught me a lesson: beware of
preconceptions! This is a very high quality instrument and one of
which Gretsch can be wholly proud."
