The
Dykes and Harrison
Family History Web Site
INTRODUCTION
By Ray Harrison.
My special
thanks to all the Dykes-Harrison-Furze-Seldon family members who have contributed so much information,
photographs and documents especially to my son Mark Andrew Harrison who spent many hours
searching and obtaining certificates, documents and other vital information from
'The Family
Records Centre' in London. By placing
this family
history onto the 'World Wide Web' I hope it will encourage others who have an
interest in discovering their roots to do the same. When
I decided to
trace Bridgette, my wife's Furze-Seldon family roots, I realised just how little I knew about
my own! Bridgette like myself, were born to parents from an age that believed in the
Victorian belief that "Children should be Seen but not Heard"
so neither of us ever dreamt of asking questions about our family,
relatives or even less about their lives. My enthusiasm and determination to discover more
about the Dykes-Harrison-Furze-Seldon family histories and descendants started me
on this quest to discover our roots.
I recall my mother Ruby Isobel Harrison nee Dykes, on rare occasions, saying her father was a bad tempered sod who owned a building and funeral business in Ashington, Northumberland, and that she was born in Cullercoats, Northumberland but talked little about her childhood.
I knew my father Alexander Harrison was a coal miner, born in Ashington, as for his family and relatives, I was told he'd a brother and two sisters and a miserable mother.
Tracing family history can prove to be quite a challenge but a challenge certainly worthwhile, as family history is more than just a collection of facts and dates but a blend of one's recalled memories and from family members, old and new photographs and where possible memorabilia that when combined together produce a family history reflecting their lives and a period of social history! I decided to lay out the family web site in an easy to follow book page format, I hope you enjoy reading about your past:
