'The Editor' Issue No.1: The first-ever
issue of the newsletter was dated 'Midsummer 1998' and published
on 31st July'98. This was the only 4-page newsletter -
and the only issue to feature a photo' (of Penzance harbour
during the 1998 Maritime Festival) on the back-page. Headlines
included:
Rainyday
Moves On, the story of Martin Val Baker's Rainyday
Gallery move from Chapel Street to bigger premises in Market Jew
Street, Penzance. An obituary of the Mousehole-based artist Jack
Pender; the 'Summer'98' programme of
events at the Minack Theatre; Book
News and Bookshop Roundup;
' Heron In St. Ives'; Tall
Ships Race Away and a paragraph on 'Wycliffe'
tv repeats.
No.2 dated Autumn'98, released on 21st September'98, increased to 8-pages and assumed the familier format of a photo' on the front page! The main story was on: Eclipse'99...A Bonus for Cornish tourism, or Chaos? Other headlines included:
Eden Project Gets Green Light; 'Arthur Stone' Claim for Tintagel; Tangye books fetch high prices at auction; 'Pilchards...And Lobsters' and a 'Wycliffe' bibliography
No. 3: New Year'99, issued 19th January'99, was again 8 pages and featured an atmospheric cover photo' of a winter storm lashing the entrance to Fowey harbour. Headlines included:
'Spooky' Big Cat Sightings Across Penwith; Eclipse'99 Fever; More on lobsters, and the 1999 Daphne du Maurier Festival.
No.4: dated Spring'99, released 20th April'99, 8 pages, featured one of the newsletter's best-ever cover photos'; 'Polperro' by James Scott caused many comments and responses. Headlines were:
Demelza's Decorating Blues; Rainyday's Arts Guide; Eclipse'99 Update; a report on the new Wharfside Complex in Penzance and 'Tangye Connections' [the story of the editor's connections with Derek Tangye and Minack]....
The Cornish Connections Summer Booklist a few weeks later, also included a 2-page 'Newsletter Extra', including a photo' of The Ship Inn and Harbour Wall, Porthleven. The lead story was 'The Gardens of Heligan are not Lost....'
No.5: dated High Summer'99, released 21st August'99, for the first time ran to 12 pages. The cover photo' was of 'Cottages at Velandreath, Sennen' and asked "Where does your heart lie in Cornwall?' Headlines were:
Rock Is the Place to be Seen; Post Eclipse'99: An Editorial; Demelza's Decorating Saga (the story continued); St. Ives Festival'99 and 'Progress for Eden' (an early report on the Eden Project).
No.6 Autumn'99, released 6th November'99, again 12-pages, featured a cover photo' of the Ship Inn, Portloe, with a main headline story:
'On Sharks, Swordfish and other Fishy Tales; Book and Auction News; The Beast of Bodmin won't go Away!, plus an - exclusive - previously unpublished, 1970's photo' of Denys Val Baker with his daughter Demelza.
No.7, dated 01-2000 and released on the 29th January'00, had grown to our first 16-page issue. The cover photo' was of 'Creek-side cottages on the River Fal near Coombe'; the headline read:
Weather extremes...it's too warm, then too wet. Other stories included; The Road to Eden, an obituary on Sven Berlin 1911-1999 and 'So where does YOUR heart lie in Cornwall?'
No.8, (12 pages) was the
first newsletter to feature our new 'Celtic' font heading. Dated
Spring'00 and released on the 8th April'00. The cover photo' was
of the Tangye's donkeys Merlin and Susie. The lead story related
the 'real' story behind recent sensationalistic media headlines:
Tangye Spy Allegations - it's nonsense! The story produced 'News from Cornwall's' biggest-ever mailbag. Other story's in the issue included; 'Tangye' a new biography by David Power; The Tale of a Flying Pony on Bodmin Moor; Fly the flag of Saint Pirran and a short story entitled, 'A Ghostly View'
No.9, Summer'00, dated 24th June'00 (12-pages) featured a cover photo' of 'The wild north coast, dramatic even in Summer. A view from Pendeen Watch Lighthouse.' and a lead story entitled, Eden Project 'Awesome'. Page three included a further photo' of the Eden Project under construction. Other stories in the issue included:
Book and Arts News; News Briefs; Three Leaves from the Editor's Cornish Notebook and a poem, 'The Heart Lies in Strange Places' by John Wilson of Zennor. No.9 also featured the first of a series of sketches by Maggie Scott.
No.10, Autumn'00, released 30th September'00 - our second 16-page issue - with a cover photo' of 'Sennen Cove looking towards Cape Cornwall', and a lead story of, 'Tangye' first edition sells out'. David Power's dual-biography sells out in little over three weeks.... Other headlines were:
'Spy Writer Donates Cliff-top Land and Sparks a Storm' (on John Le Carre); News Briefs; Web Site of the Quarter and Book and Arts News
No.11, New Year '01. A 16-page newsletter was issued on the 29th January'01, for the first time with a sketch on the front cover and photo' illustrations inside. The lead story read; 'New Edition of Britain's Art Colony by the Sea at last Re-issued'. Other headlines included:
A Ginger at the Tinner's; News Briefs; Book and Arts News and 'More Favourite Walks from the Editor's Cornish Notebook. The issue also featured another - exclusive - unpublished photo' of DENYS VAL BAKER.
No.12, Spring'01. Again 16-pages in a 'buff' coloured cover featuring a photo' of 'A Tropical view from Bolitho Gardens, Penzance across the bay to St. Michael's Mount': Lead stories were 'Latest Gallery Guide the Best Yet' and 'There is no need to stay Away' [on footpath closures and FMD]. Other headlines included:
Inn Guide Update, Web Site of the Quarter, an obituary of Mary Williams, 'More Leaves from your editor's notebook', 'Gaps in your book collection - just how scarce are those titles?' - and two - exclusive - 1950's photographs of DEREK & JEANNIE TANGYE
No.13 'A Baker's Dozen', Summer'01 16-page issue, for the first time in a cream card cover featuring a photo' of oyster beds at Porthnavas Creek off the Helston River. This issue included:
Editorial, Remembering Denys Val Baker by Amy Myers; Inn Guide update, News Briefs, Web Sites of the Quarter, Book and Arts News, More Leaves from the Editor's Cornish Notebook (around and about the Helford), Return of the Hungry Horse and 'Meet Amber' (the first part of the story of our new kitten)
No.14, Autumn'01. The first 20-page issue, again in a cream card cover. The cover photo' was of Newyln, the new location for Cornish Connections. Headlines were -
Editorial, 'Serendipity in Cornwall (part 1)' by Amy Myers, Inn Guide Update, Nigel Tangye 1909-1998 by Moira Tangye, News Briefs, 'Notes from a book shop in Cornwall' by Kelvin Hearn, Web Sites of the Quarter, Book & Arts News, 'Oh! Amber: A Day to Forget, A View of Life with Old Bill and a Recipe for Vodka Jelly!
No.15, New Year'02. 20-pages, issued in a 'Daffodil Yellow' cover. The cover photo' was of the Lanyon Quoit. Headlines included:
Editorial, 'Those Were the Days', part 2 of Amy Myers feature on publisher William Kimber's Cornish list, Inn Guide Update, 'SANU' surfaces: Denys Val Baker's old MFV is safely moored in the Gannel estuary (a report and exclusive photo', News Briefs, Notes from a Book Shop', part 2 of Kelvin Hearn's story, Web Sites of the Quarter, Book & Arts News, Amber: Settling in to her new Home, A View of Life with 'Old Bill' and a recipe.
No.16, Spring'02. Our first 24-page issue. Cream Covers. Photo' illustration of boats at Sennen Cove. Headlines included:
