Greater Brighouse Area Citizens Panel

A Survey of Local People's Views, initially targeted at 1000 members of the public in the Greater Brighouse Area.

First Survey, November 2005

Q1. The future of the Brighouse Regeneration Forum

Do you think this Forum should be:-

    1. A body formally recognised by the Council as one of Calderdale's Partner bodies, working with Council Officers to facilitate the Council's regeneration policy for Brighouse? Acting as a means of informing local people about what will happen and when?
    2. A means for local people to meet, express their views on the infrastructure and developments which Brighouse needs, and to communicate these views to the Local Authority? To campaign for these needs both with the Local Authority and Nationally through the MP for Calder Valley?
    3. Neither of these, we need an alternative?

Q 2. Brighouse Town Centre

    1. Do you agree that Council policy should focus more on supporting Town Centre businesses and improving the Town's vibrancy? Y / N
    2. The Brighouse Forum, together with the 3B's has already secured CCTV for our Town Centre and, we are urgently pursuing the following. Which of these do you agree with?

2.2.1 First Hour Free for shoppers and permits for all day workers Y / N

2.2.2 Immediate Bus Station improvements Y / N

2.2.3 A full study, including public consultation and re-think of the road system around the Town Centre. Y / N

2.2.4 None of these, the Town Centre is doing OK as it is. Y / N

Q3. The Water Leisure Debate.

There has been a serious call for a Water Fun Extravaganza to include a gymnasium, saunas, waves machine and flumes as well as the Swimming Pool, based on the Brookfoot and Elland Road area. This facility would be part of a more comprehensive and diverse leisure plan running along sections of both river and canal fronts from Clifton Beck to Cromwell Bottom.

3.1 Do you agree?

or

Should we stick with the present option of just a 5-lane pool between the river and the canal near the Town Centre?

Q.4 Conservation Areas and the Green Belt. (Clifton and Woodhouse)

In October Calderdale Council created three new conservation areas in Savile Park, Skircoat Green and Huddersfield Road East. There are presently 52 Conservation Areas in Bradford Metro, compared with only 19 in Calderdale, none of these located in the Greater Brighouse Area. Whether by accident, design or past neglect, areas of historical interest such as Kirklees Park, and locations like Clifton and Woodhouse have been overlooked.

    1. Do you favour the creation of Conservation Areas?
    2. Do you think we should explore and pursue the possible creation of them in the Greater Brighouse Area?
    3. We need to look at different alternatives to protect our Green Belt and Open Spaces.

Q5. Mill Royd St. and the Flour Mill

There is a growing public pressure for Calderdale Council to re-visit its 1998 decision and have an open and public debate on the Flour Mill issues, especially the closure of Mill Royd Street.

    1. Do you agree with this view?
    2. Do you think there should be an "open book" and "blank-sheet" debate, involving the people who will be effected by any scheme?
    3. Present Council plans would result in a large retail development and the permanent closure of Mill Royd Street. Do you think it better to leave things alone and let the Council and their recently selected developer to "get on with it"?
