Dame Kelly Homes writes to congratulate Ben Mounsey

Thank you for keeping me informed about the work of Sport Rastrick and your target to provide new facilities for sport and activities in the Rastrick area.

In a few years time, if I am able to come and visit to see what you have achieved, I would certainly be interested to meet the team and offer whatever further support and advice I can.

Will you also please convey my personal congratulations to the first Sport Rastrick, sports personality of the year, Ben Mounsey. I was very interested to see the pictures of Ben running with such determination over those beautiful Yorkshire Fells.  It made me wish I could join him and give him a run for his money! Who knows, one day?

Finally, I wish to wholeheartedly support the excellent work that so many people like Ben are doing in encouraging young people to take up sport and a healthy activity.  The young people of Rastrick were right to identify Ben as an excellent local role model.  I hope he will enjoy being not only an Ambassador for sport but also a leading example as a volunteer with young people.

Best wishes and good luck in the future.

Dame Kelly Holmes, Double Olympic Champion,

For background, I read an article entitled Athlete Ben collects new sports award at Brighouse Echo, 29th June 2007.

Sports Personality of the Year, 2007

Ben Mounsey

Ben Mounsey receives his Award from Mick Clarke, President of The Society of St George.

Ben Mounsey was presented with the 'Sport Rastrick' Sports Personality of the Year Award at the Holiday Inn at Clifton, Brighouse on Thursday 14th June, 2007 by Michael Clarke, President of the Society of  St George in Bradford, Calderdale & Kirklees.

In presenting the award, Mr Clarke said it gave him great pleasure to acknowledge the excellent work Ben has done to encourage and inspire young people to get involved in a sporting activity and a healthier life-style. Not forgetting the recognition of his personal achievements in running and as a fell runner for Calder Valley.

Young people from Rastrick prepared nominations of sporting personalities known to them and with connections to the Rastrick area, and from this list Ben you have been chosen by Brighouse Echo's Sports Editor, David Parker to receive this first presentation of the award. You are a very worthy choice and I hope you will enjoy showing all your family, friends and colleagues this fine trophy. I also hope you will keep up the good work of encouraging more young people, especially from Rastrick, to join your running club. Who knows, in years to come some may end up running not only in Calderdale and Yorkshire but may well run for England too!

In accepting the award, Ben said, I am over the moon to have been both nominated and selected. I first became interested in running when I was studying at Loughborough University. I found it helped me to both enjoy life and get the most out of my studies. I would recommend all young people to take up a sport, it brings much more fulfillment to life than you can imagine.

Ben Mounsey teaches at Brooksbank School, Elland where he was a former pupil and Deputy Headboy.

He holds a running club for young people three times a week, starting at 7.30am.which is attended by young people from Rastrick .
