Maiden Castle

Maiden Castle Site

Maiden Castle was the ancient oppidum (tribal capital) of the Durotriges. The 'Maiden' part of the name is from the Celtic for big hill 'mai dun'. It was started, probably, over 5,000 years ago, but the current site is from 450-300 BCE. It was abandoned in the early Roman period when the Romans moved the tribe to the nearby new city of Dorchester. It is one of the largest hill forts in Europe.
