Originally devised by Tim Eagling and published in White Dwarf #274 as "40K In 40 Minutes", these are guidelines for running quick & dirty, skirmish type games of 40K.
After slight tweaking they were renamed to "Combat Patrol", Tim Eagling's credit disappeared, and they were published in the 4th edition Warhammer 40000 rulebook.
With the release of 5th Edition, and the reorganisation of the GW website, these rules have now disappeared from the "official" GW pantheon.
Patrols of no more than 400 points
You must have one Troop choice
You may have one HQ, but no more than one
No special characters
No model with more than 2 wounds
No 2+ saves
No vehicles with a total Armour value greater than 33 (front + side + rear)
No ordnance weapons
Remaining points spent on anything in the Codex, following the usual guidelines
The Combat Patrol mission should ideally be played over 4'x 4' area

Both sides have unexpectedly collided with an enemy force whilst patrolling a disputed area.
SET-UP - Both players roll a D6; the player that scores higher gets to choose his deployment zone. Units must be deployed within 12" of the table edge. The player that scored the higher result now deploys one unit in his deployment zone. The players take it in turns deploying a unit at a time until both their entire forces are on the table. Now, roll for who gets the first turn. Highest score may choose whether to go first or second.
SCENARIO SPECIAL RULES - Infiltrate, Victory Points
MISSION OBJECTIVE - Both players must attempt to eliminate the enemy without losing too much of their own strength. The player with the highest Victory Points total wins the game.
GAME LENGTH - The mission lasts for six turns
Tim Eagling (the original author of "40K In 40 Minutes") has his own website. It's called Patrol Clash, and you can find it at http://www.patrolclash.org.uk/.
Games Workshop did put up PDF files of the original articles from White Dwarf #274 and #284, but these have now disappeared.
