Above
is a
section of the 1905 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map. Kelly Cross, the turn
into Lustleigh, is on the A382 about 400 yds off the left edge of the
map.
The red boundary
shows the
extent of the current Kelly Mine site at approximately SX 795818. Old
levels (adits) up the
hillside are shown on the map; there are more small workings in the
area, some visible from the footpath running north-east from alongside
the mine site.
Hawkmoor Mine,
another micaceous haematite mine, is towards the right (east) of the
map. It is on private land with no access.
The 1907 photograph is almost certainly of the early 1900s shaft area which is shown as a building at the top (north) corner of the present mine site.
A -
Lower adit at the bottom of the incline (not shown) from which ore was
extracted after the shaft was abandonded in about 1920.
B -
Site of middle adit and associated spoil heap.
C -
Site of the Slade workings on the extension of the Hawkmoor Mine lodes,
the last phase of working. A major collapse here resulted in closure in
1951.
