The Kelly Mine Preservation Society ( KMPS ) was
formed in 1984, to save and restore this
important monument to Dartmoor's mining heritage.
The mine is located on the eastern flank of Dartmoor, within the National Park. Work
commenced in 1985 and has continued with the
regular meetings on most Wednesdays and Sundays; The first
Sunday of each month is a working day.
The restoration work is divided into projects
which are undertaken by groups or individuals. Much of the work
on the more extended projects is carried out at regular
Wednesday meetings.
Work groups are encouraged to pay careful
attention to the details provided by plans and
photographs brought to light by the Society's
researchers and the recollections of ex-miners.
Several surviving miners have been traced and
their recorded interviews have provided much
valuable information into the miners' working
practices and conditions.
The Society is funded by membership
subscriptions, individual donations and various grants. Many members
not actively involved in the
restoration work are kept up-to-date with
progress by means of a bi-monthly newsletter (see
sample newsletter, 1.1MB image).
The affairs of the Society are guided by a
committee of nine elected members, which meets
quarterly. The AGM, usually held on the first
Sunday in November, marks the beginning of the
new membership year. It provides the opportunity
for the membership to review the progress of the
Society and to elect the new committee.
