These are a few of the attractions in and around the area which you might like to visit.  For further information on these and other attractions, visit Lønstrup Tourist Information at Strandvejen 90 Tel. 98 96 02 22.

Lønstrup - A fishing village with 400 inhabitants retaining a traditional atmosphere, where you can enjoy a stroll amongst the colourful houses or visit the many galleries of local artists and potters.  The village is situated in a narrow gorge, surrounded by high overgrown dunes created by drifting sand, that formed high dunes in the 19th century.  These dunes are now covered in vegetation.

Lønstrup Klint - The 12 Km long cliff at Lønstrup Klint offers a unique opportunity to see the sediments of the last Ice Age, as the North sea has created a typical cross-section of the hilly island of Vendsyssel.

Mårup Church - A small romantic 12th century church which stands as a dramatic memorial to the ravaging forces of nature.  The breaking down of the coast and drifting sand meant that the church ceased to be a parish church in 1928, and was replaced with the Lønstrup church.  It is now situated close to the edge of the high cliff and looked after by the National Museum.  The anchor by the west gable  comes from the English frigate "The Crescent" which was wrecked off the coast in 1808.  240 sailors lost their lives and are buried in three communal graves in the cemetery where a memorial has been erected.

Rubjerg Knude - One of the most impressive viewpoints of the West coast.  The North Sea beats incessantly against the foot, causing it to move a couple of metres in land each year.  The cliff is the site of constantly drifting sand, and the high dunes are visible from high inland.

Rubjerg Lighthouse - Although built in the early 1900's, it became obscure from the from the sea by high sand dunes by the 1960's and was subsequently closed.  Now a museum with special exhibitions about sand, and the drifting sands, which has plagued the region since the 18th century.  Today, the museum itself is partly covered by sand.

Rubjerg Old Cemetery - The site of Rubjerg Old Church is part of the  landscape of Rubjerg Knude.  The church was demolished and the materials used in the building of the present Rubjerg Church a couple of kilometres further inland.  The outer perimeter of the old church is marked by grassy banks, and some of the gravestones have been preserved.

Vennebjerg Church - The highest standing church in western Vendsyssel.  The church is a landmark, its tower visible from several miles out to sea.  Near the church is the burial mound Klangshøj (89m).  Standing on it, you can see both coasts on either side of  Vendsyssel in clear weather.

Vennebjerg Mill - is a beautiful, old wooden mill which, weather permitting, can be seen operating in the summer.

Hjørring  - The old Capital of Vendsyssel with its present day population of 25,000 was first granted municipal chapter in 1423.  Today, it is a thriving shopping town and a centre for industry and education.

Børglum Kloster - The monastery is one of the oldest historical places in Denmark.  In 1086, it is mentioned as a royal residence for Canute the Holy.  In 1130, it became an episcopal residence.  The abbey and the courtyard are open to the public.

Vrejlev Kloster - Built in 1250 as a nunnery for the strict Premonstratensian Order - and thereby a daughter monastery for the nearby Børglum Kloster ( see above ).  Privately owned. The grave digger has the key to the abbey, which is now the parish church.

Hirtshals North Sea Centre - A large and fascinating salt-water aquarium and museum of modern fishing.  Outdoor sealarium and Oceanarium.

Skagen - Modern fishing port and one of the a well-known holiday resort in Denmark.  The works of the 19th century impressionists can be seen in Anna and Michael Ancher's House, and at the Skagen Museum.  There is a church, engulfed in the drifting sands, west of Skagen.  Grenen, where the Kattegat and the Skagerrak meet ( Baltic and North Sea ), is at the top of Denmark.

Løkken - Vendsyssel's largest holiday resort with a lively atmosphere. Wide sandy beach. Cars are allowed onto the beach.

Tørnby Klitplantage - Typical dune plantation of trees with lakes and paths situated next to the sandy Tørnby beach.

Tversted Klitplantage - With its Man-made lakes, the plantation has almost become as idyllic as parts of Eastern Denmark, in between the sand dunes and the wide beach.  The roof-borne post mill at the Tversted lakes is an open museum.

Uggerby Å - One of the largest and most stocked fishing rivers in the region.  Fishing licenses are available from tourist information offices.
