Welcome to the web site for and about the activities of 'The Ramblers' in Cornwall. New members and people that have come to live in Cornwall are all welcome and we hope that you will join us on walks social events and meetings. Non members are welcome too on all walks and are invited to try out walks with different groups before joining the Ramblers. Membership of a local walking group gives you the opportunity to meet like-minded people. Diary Date for Area AGM 2009 and The Walks BookIt was decided at the April Area Meeting that, because our AGM has to be in February, the schedule for the Walks Book would also have to change. The date for the 2009 Area AGM will be February 28th - Caradon will be the host group. COASTAL FOOTPATH WALKSThe next four months will see us exploring Cadgwith to Portscatho passing the Manacles which are the most dangerous reefs on the south coast about a mile out to sea. Then the beautiful Helford river, a former smugglers’ haunt and on to the famous maritime port of Falmouth which, in Tudor times, was the busiest port in the kingdom. The coastal path walks are held on the first Saturday of each month. We all meet, as published on this web site in the walks list and in the walks book, at the designated car park. We and are then transported by coach to the start of the walk so that we can return to our vehicles at the end of the trek. Costs are currently five pounds per person. Each month’s walk is between eight to ten miles long and is normally grade M. In its entirety, it is a wonderful walk around Cornwall’s picturesque coastline and takes two years and eleven months to complete the 431 kilometres/268 miles. The walks are very popular but I would like to invite walkers from all areas to come and join our friendly group. I look forward to welcoming you all on our next walk! Please send a representative from each group to find out what's going on in the Ramblers Cornish groups and nationally. All are welcome.20s and 30s group - KernowbootsSally Berridge has successfully started a new group for younger walkers in their 20s & 30s. Find out what it's all about - includes walks listing.Walkers wanted for The Land’s End TrailThe Land's End Trail, from Land's End to Avebury (Wilts), originated with an idea by Hugh Miners in 1984 and was developed by ramblers Robert Wicks, Robert Preston and Robin Menneer in the 1990s. It is designed as an inland route, using the high ground where possible, to complement and relieve the over-used South-West Coast Path. The LET crosses Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Polden Hills and Salisbury Plain. Eventually it is intended to be part of the long-awaited Land’s End to John o’Groats path. The Land's End Trail Group are currently revising the Cornish section of the Land's End Trail, from Land's End as far as Tavistock. Robert Preston is re-walking the Trail, checking for route changes and doing some clearance work where necessary. Oliver Howes, a newcomer to the group, is following in Robert's footsteps and preparing the Trail for publication to the web. It will take the form of a PDF document, and will include parking, bed and breakfast possibilities and interest along the way. Linked web pages will carry descriptions and photos of the points of interest. None of the Land's End Trail Group are backpackers these days so they are deficient in one important area of research. They are, therefore, looking for a serious backpacker who loves long distance trails. His or her task would be to walk the trail in the group's footsteps, seeking out possible farms (or similar) along the way, where a backpacker might pitch a tent for the night, have the use of toilet facilities and maybe even get a hot breakfast. Anyone who feels like volunteering for this fascinating, but arduous and totally unpaid, task can get in touch with Oliver Howes.
