This year will be the 7th Eastern lights Cavalcade which to date, has raised approximately £43,000 for the sole beneficiary – the James Paget Hospital Accident and Emergency unit (A & E). Every single penny made from entry tickets, collections and contributions is donated to the unit.
Money donated to the A & E unit has purchased a blood gas analyser machine, costing approximately £17,000. This was recently upgraded at a cost of about £3,000 to expand its capability and has an approximate 10 year working life expectancy, requiring a service package commitment of a daily 20 minute calibration and service costing roughly £3,000 per year and is used many times daily.
Previously the A & E unit had no machine for analysis, relying on using the Intensive Care unit’s machine or through the hospital’s own biochemistry lab which was adequate - but with their own machine on site, blood results are now instantly obtained which is a big plus for critically ill patients. "A real Life and time saver".
A urine analyzer machine has also been purchased from proceeds of the cavalcades.
Funds have been used to decorate and carpet the Relatives Room. A vanity sink, new furniture and tea/coffee facilities and water colour picture were installed and weekly fresh flowers are provided. This is where relatives or friends can wait for news of loved ones in a quiet comfortable atmosphere away from the main A & E waiting area.
The 4 departments ("Majors", "Resussicatation room", "See and treat" and "minors") have had refit of new cupboards, shelving, storage units and work surfaces.
It costs approximately £2,000 to run the Cavalcade which is funded from sponsorship and trade stands pitch sales.
