[Kefallonia 2010]

We started a weeks holiday in the Greek Island Kefallonia (large island off the west coast of central Greece) on September 18th (Kefallonia can be spelt with a "C" or with a single "l").

The flight went smoothly and we were met at the airport and put on a coach that took us to our hotel. The island is very hilly and there are numerous hairpin bends which is bad enough in a car but was pretty horrendous when travelling in a bus!

The hotel was very nice and the people most welcoming and pleasant. We had a lovely corner room with a balcony so we had views of the sea on both sides. The hotel is on a rise outside the fishing village of Fiscado. Conveniently, on the night we arrived the hotel had a dinner available - we went bed-and-breakfast in our normal way but didn't fancy looking for a restaurant on the first night.

We had a hire car from Sunday to Friday, although the hotel did provide transport to and from Fiscado. On Sunday we drove to Assos - very gingerly (I was getting used to a manual shift car and the steep roads with hairpins). Assos has a nice harbour and also a castle on a large rock. We didn't go to the castle since the climb was quite steep, but the harbour had some nice restaurants and so we sat in the sun and enjoyed a drink. On that first evening we ate at one of the many restaurants in Fiscado (we were not impressed with the one we happened to select).

On the Monday morning we went to Emblisi Beach, which was the nearest to the hotel. None of the beaches we went to had sand - it was pebbles with very fine grit at the waters edge. The water itself was as clear as a bell. We sat on the beach for a while until it became too hot and then later went to Fiscado and had a good look round.

Fiscado is very popular with the sailing fraternity and there were yachts and other boats going in and out all the time - plenty to watch with a cool drink in the hand!! The boats tie up end-on, most with the stern next to the land - this enables a good number of boats to tie up, although I was told that in high season there was not enough room and boats had to drop anchor in the bay.

The waterfront was totally taken up by restaurants, cafe's and bars. Behind were souvenir shops and one or two small supermarkets. The restaurants were not cheap - probably because of the well-healed sailing fraternity!

We explored other beaches - one we liked was called Jerusalem Beach - we hired a couple of loungers and a big umbrella on the beach and just lay and read (I did a lot of reading). Behind the beach was a Taverna where we could get cool drinks and coffee. On a couple of nights for our evening meal we went to restaurants in Adipata - these tended to be better and cheaper than those in Fiscado. The hotel did an excellent Barbecue on a Wednesday which we decided to have.

One day we decided to go on a run to a Monastery. On the way we met a goat roadblock! After that we called in a small cafe. While we were drinking our coffee we watched a puppy playing with a kitten - they were thoroughly enjoying themselves - when the kitten had had enough it hid behind a cupboard so that the puppy couldn't reach it. The owner said that often the kitten was dripping because the puppy licked it all over!

When we got to the monastery it was closed. We carried on towards Fiscado and called in another Taverna where we saw a couple we had met on Jerusalem beach. They asked us to join them for a cup of tea at the their apartment which was on the edge of Fiscado and had a beautiful view plus direct access, via steps, to the sea.

We went to another harbour called Agia Efimia another day - as far as boats were concerned it wasn't nearly as busy as Fiscado but it had a pleasant waterfront with lots of cafe's and restaurants.

Altogether we had a very restful and peaceful holiday. The weather was hot and sunny every day, except the day we left. The area we were in didn't really cater for teenagers, and many of those in the hotel were retired like us. Most of the tourists we met were from the UK - Agnes heard one Italian couple. I think in the peak season it is much busier and very hot but it was just perfect for us.
