work selecting finalists and soon you'll have the chance to vote on the ultimate

A selection of the photos entered from
Surrey and Sussex will appear here on the website, and the judges will select
five finalists in each category. Visitors to the website will be able to vote

eta. is a development organisation that
creates opportunities for visual artists of all types in the south east of
England.
We understand the peculiarities of working
as a professional artist. Not only are we artists ourselves, but all our work is
informed by what other artists tell us. For example, we recognise that there is
no defined career path for artists and that many work in isolation. We
appreciate that artists have to be multi-skilled and self-managing. Above all,
we know how difficult it can be for artists to gain access to serious, unbiased
critical appraisal of their work.We offer training, professional development and
project management to help artists in their careers.
Our main services are:
Artists' Mentoring Scheme (AMS) :: Makers' Mentoring Scheme
(MMS) :: Artists' Training Programme (ATP)
We also offer a range of publications, reports and articles on
topics of relevance to visual artists. eta Services contains more information
about all our services.
eta. is a not-for-profit company. The
underlying ethos is to create a non-hierarchical environment in which
influential professionals, many of whom are artists, are able to contribute to
schemes and projects in ways that are appropriate to their levels of experience.
We work with a team of arts practice and arts management specialists who apply
their talent and expertise to our projects. eta, therefore, is built around
co-operative groups of colleagues who bring an excellent pool of knowledge to
the work. The result is that we can provide services that are artist-centred and
of high quality.
Our mission is threefold:
To improve the prospects of artists living and working in the
south east.
To provide opportunities for artists' continuing professional
development.
To disseminate information about interesting and successful
models of practice.
We are also guided by three key principles:
Art practice is a process, and as such is inseparable from the
economic and organisational aspects of an artist's work, means of successful
production and artistic development.
Artists need to be multi-skilled to develop articulacies
beyond the specialised activity of making art alone.
Artists are central to the health of cultural industries.

HASTINGS CREATIVE MEDIA
COMMUNITY
There is currently an online community of 100 local
creative people who discuss things and share needs, wants and ideas by email.
The group is a 'yahoo' community called 'Hastings Creative Media Community' -
HCMC. It was one of the instigators for the Hastings Arts Forum.
If you are interested in joining
this online community, you can find out more at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/H-C-M-C/
If you have a 'yahoo' email address, log in and then go to this page - it makes
the sign up easier.
When you go through the
subscription process, there is an option to receive any messages sent during one
day as a single email, which some people prefer. It is under the 'Message
Delivery section' and it is called 'Daily
Digest'.
'hastings arts' is an organisation which
promotes contemporary local artists to a regional, national and even
international audience, by using traditional and new methods of marketing. The
website is open to all artists in the area, whether they are inexperienced
students of art or well-established figureheads.

STITCHED TEXTILES by June Barnes & CERAMIC POTS by Nital
Patel@ Stables Art Gallery (10 Apr - 9 May)
Saturday 10 April to Sunday 9 May Open 10.30 am to 1.00 pm daily
Inspired by water and a recent trip to Australia, June’s work consists of
at least three layers of cloth held together with stitch. Exploring many
avenues—piecing, stitching, embellishing, shrinking and dyeing—developing
discoveries, which in turn expose new ideas. Currently using natural fibres in
neutral shades to create textured surfaces with stitch and shrinkage, finally
adding colour to the finished piece.
She has exhibited widely, collecting awards in Britain, Europe and the
USA.
CERAMIC POTS by Nital Patel
‘A sumptuous cocktail of colour and texture inspire my work. Each has its
own characteristic: a string of found sea objects worn like a necklace or a
belt, even a prickly textured spine with a glazed interior. Taking references
from the sea and its inhabitants, my vessels are hand built to be organic and
pod-like.’

Touring Show :: The
Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition is organised by the Natural
History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. It is the most prestigious and
successful event of its kind in the world. 'Every year we're impressed by the
even greater achievementsof the photographers, and this year's magnificent
collection of images is no exception.' said Sarah Kavanagh, Competition Manager.
'The exhibition will be a must-see for all lovers of art, nature and photography
and adventure, as the competition has long been recognised as a showcase for the
very best international photography of the natural world'.
The competition's aim is to find the best wildlife
pictures taken by photographers of all ages from around the world, which show
the wonder, splendour, drama and variety of life on Earth and inspire people to
value and appreciate it. At the same time, it aims to show the artistry involved
in wildlife photography and encourage a new generation of photographera to
produce visionary and expressive interpretations of nature.
This year's winning image of a young boy looking through
a zoo window at a majestic gorilla was among more than 20,500 entries, from over
60 countries. 'Gorilla and Boy' has captured a moment when two primates appear
to be caught in thought - the gorilla resigned and looking out of the picture
and the boy seeming in earnest thought, himself incarcerated in gloom. The image
forces us to re-evaluate our resposibility to our fellow creatures.

@ Stables Theatre (27 Apr - 8 May)
Tuesday 27 April to Saturday 8 May at 7.30 pm
No
performances on Sunday or Monday
An entrhralling & entrancing entertainment of not one, not
two, but three, yes three! presentations of victorian melodrama. The Brave
Bugler or Up the Khyber Pass, the Wages of Sin or Perfidious Piecework, and The
Tram Track Tragedy or Little Nellie’s Dilemma.
Each piece so heart-warmingly,
spine-tinglingly, nail-biteingly, tear-jerkingly, teeth-clenchingly, and yet so
side-splittingly enacted by unparalleled performers. Our vital, vivacious and
voluptuous vocalists will sing solos of a select (and refined!)
variety.
Our audience is invited to wear costume,
and to hiss, boo, laugh, cheer and sing along at will! Saturday nights are gala
nights! Join us afterwards for a free glass of bubbly, and prizes for the
wearers of the two most authentic costumes.

Crompton, who wrote the much-loved William books.

prominent literary figure. Crippled with polio as a young woman, she turned
personal tragedy into lasting success.
The play was adapted and broadcast on
BBC Radio 4 in 2001.

other plays:

Catharine Hardwicke 2003
100mins USA
Thirteen is co-written by teenager Nikki Reed, who also stars in the movie.
Tracy , a serious student, finds herself needing to express her anger and
resentment at her fractured family life. To rebel, she pursues a friendship with
the reckless, alluring Evie (Reed), who seems to have all the cocksure freedom
that Tracy desires. What follows is harrowing and compelling: Tracy becomes
enmeshed in a relationship with Evie whilst her mother, struggles desperately to
hold on to her daughter's love. Thirteen makes every step on this path utterly
convincing, with a vivid script, energized direction, and astonishingly alive
performances. Jolting, sad, & mesmerizing.

21 GRAMS
Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, Benicio Del Toro, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Clea
DuVall, Melissa Leo
Life has a way of coming up with resonant metaphors, incredible ironies,
and surprising coincidences.
Chained to death's door, Paul receives the gift of life, only to surrender
it so that another can go on.
A devastating event in the present forces Christina to return to her past
and reject her future.
Trapped by his spiritual mission, Jack carries such great guilt that hope
and redemption seem beyond possibility.
At the crossroads of life and death, all three collide in a whirlwind of
revenge and forgiveness.
21 Grams is the weight we lose when we die, the weight carried by those who
survive. 21 Grams: the gravity of life.

country and the Sara Lee Trust has become a centre of excellence providing a
full range of complementary therapies to help support people physically and
emotionally at their most vulnerable time. We have beautiful and tranquil
treatment rooms in St. Leonards and now offer therapies to people in their own
homes. We work closely with the hospice and the medical profession. The trust
was set up in 1995 in memory of Sara Lee who died of cancer at the age of 31.
Through complementary therapies Sara was able to retain her independence and
dignity until the end of her life. It was Sara's wish that others could benefit
from free access to the type of therapies that had so helped her. So
PLEASE help us to continue this valuable work by supporting THE
TRUSTS FIRST EVER AMAZING MUSICAL FUSION EVENT. Sue

9 INTRODUCING ....... ARTS EVENT LIST :: HASTINGS &
SE
Editor Christopher Hamblin writes:
This is a weekly information Email about Arts Events
in the SE region centering on Hastings, it works
on the idea that reminding people who are "interested in arts
events" makes them more likely to attend.
At the moment it is sent out to
over 300 readers. To make this new listing really effective, we need to expand
the readership. Please encourage people who you think would like to be
informed to send an email to chrishamblin@tiscali.co.uk

For three years I have run a similar Arts Event List
in Zimbabwe which, is sent weekly to over 1000 readers who care about Arts
Events. ( see www.twinarts.co.zw/ael/current/
). This Arts Event List has also functioned as a forum for comment and
discussion about the arts in Zimbabwe.
I look forward to hearing about events you are
organising.
