Art Appreciation
The Group meets once a month and has a very varied programme. Discussions are
wide-ranging from
Fresco through Renaissance painters, Glasgow Girls and Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
New members will be made very welcome.
Beading
Members learn to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings, belts,
etc., with various sizes of bead and
beading techniques, and in colours and designs of your own choice. The cost of the
beads is not included.
Beginners Bridge
Notes on the basic concepts and conventions are given out and then you learn as you
play.
No lectures - just a friendly group of people keen to learn the 'Rolls-Royce' of card
games.
Bird-Watching
About a dozen people getting out and
about to watch the fascinating world of birds.
Bridge
You do not need a partner to join this group. Rubber bridge is played
regularly on
Tuesday afternoons by about twenty people.
Current
Affairs
Topics discussed cover a variety of
international, national and local affairs. The mixture
includes subjects, serious and otherwise, originating from the media or suggested by
Members.
Family
History
A Group of people keen to discover their roots.
Several outings planned to the National
Archives at Kew and the Family Records Office at Islington.
Gardening
Members of this popular Group enjoy
visiting each others' gardens. This is a mixed Group, with a
social element, and seed/plant swaps/sales give an opportunity to acquire plants at
reasonable prices.
History of Jazz
This very popular Jazz Group meets
once a month and they study two different artists or style of music,
using the Artists records to fully appreciate the music. They offer an updated list
of main events and
happenings in the years which started before the 20th Century and have now reached
1959. The Group
covers every aspect of Jazz, so that, eventually, Members will have become familiar with
names, styles
and instruments that make up the world of Jazz. It is a very friendly Group and you
are invited to join us
in the world of Jazz music.
Local History
This Group covers the lives of ordinary
people in the area, also the histories of wealthy families in the
large houses, many of which still exist, though now used for other purposes.
Music Appreciation
This Group meets fortnightly. They learn a great deal
from each other by input and discussion of the
chosen composer, instrument, etc., and sometimes compare different versions of the same
music.
Painting
This is a relaxed, happy Group, with
Members ranging from beginners to competent painters. We do not
aim to necessarily produce 'pretty pictures', but to discover what we are capable of doing
with any medium.
This is mostly watercolour, but Members have experimented with pastel and also acrylic.
The Group Leader
sets up a still life, or members work from their own sketches. Outdoor sketching
trips locally are organised
in the summer. Although the Group Leader is not a teacher, she is on hand to help
when necessary.
Two Play Reading Groups
The Play Reading Groups meet monthly in
members' houses, which gives a very relaxed atmosphere. They
read a wide variety of 2 and 3 act Plays. There is a short introductory discussion
of the plot and then everyone
assumes their 'characters' and reads with great interest. This makes for a very
enjoyable afternoon.
Poetry
This Group enjoys and 'appreciates' poems from
all centuries, but especially the more recent ones. Members
contribute freely. We use the anthology The Nation's Favourite Twentieth Century
Poems, edited by
Griff Rhys Jones, as our core text, supplemented by hand-outs provided by the Group
Leader.
Reading
This Group reads a variety of books,
including biographies, thrillers and historical titles. The books we read
are chosen or recommended by different Members and always provide lively discussion as to
whether we liked
them or not. Meetings are held once a month, at 2.00-4.00 p.m. in the Group Leader's
home in Ottershaw.
Scrabble
This popular Group caters for folk
who love the game of Scrabble and wish to learn and apply strategies and
thus improve their game. Our aim is to combine fun with learning, and members are
assured of plenty of laughs
Shakespeare
This is a very keen Group which often has
100% attendance. We study plays in depth, talk about those we
have seen, read scenes from the plays and usually watch illustrative videos. We also
hold an annual quiz.
Social History in 19c Britain
This Group has studied the English language,
church music and drama of the time, through the works
of William Tyndale, Thomas Tallis, John Dee and Christopher Marlowe, and will be looking
at European
and World travellers. Also expect to take a look at life under Elizabeth I.
Walking
This Walking Group is one of our most
successful and popular Groups. Most walks are fairly local,
including Egham/Thorpe/Ottershaw/Ripley/Shepperton and Windlesham. They have
ventured as far
as Newlands Corner, but the walks are always enjoyable and often finish in a local
Hostelry.
