"Escape From The Cage" series
A continuation from the the concept of the "A Cage Went In Search Of A Bird" set, this series of releases explores 3 different facets of new-music. All are unique commissioned recordings (including rarities), by some of the leading pioneers around, and some much lesser-known obscure artists.
All are great value for money!

TANGLE EDGE - Banana-Raincoat 8'40" (8'20")

Space-rock, prog, psych and cosmic musics compilation.

A snapshot of the independent/underground experimental rock scene in the late 1980's by Auricle artists and other friends. Including: early echo guitar experiments of Dean Carter (encouraged by us to develop his "Psychomuzak" project), an eclectic number by the Krautrock echo guitar whiz Günter Schickert, and also a rare track by him with the Berlin supergroup No Zen. Two faces of American prog are represented by Djam Karet (untypically first, with a guest sax player) and also with a couple of demos by the too short-lived Ken Moore Group. The British psychedelic underground is represented by the Yorkshire (interrelated) bands AMA and Rancid Poultry, with our own Alto Stratus synth ditty being a notable nod to Pink Floyd. Closing the album, are the Norwegian maestros of ethno-psychedelic Krautrock, the trippy Tangled Edge.

Produced by Auricle Music. Compiled by Alan Freeman (Summer 1989).

Compilation of experimental, industrial and avant-garde strangeness.

A most eclectic collection of experimental musics, showcasing everything from pure free improvisation: Morphogenesis, via the unique feedback machine work of David Myers (aka Arcane Device) to complex neo-classical composition: Jack Tamul. Various forms of experimental electronics and synth music are well represented, by: N.R. Hills, Biomechanoid, Michael Winnerholt, Context, Peter Frohmader and Alto Stratus. On the edge of rock, we have: the manic guitar grunge of Parisians Sleaze Art and the trippy sound of (Rancid Poultry related) Clothearz. Rather untypically, Anima's Limpe Fuchs plays amplified stones, and Asmus Tietchens takes us inside a water tank. An eclectic collection indeed!

Compiled by Alan Freeman (Spring 1990).

CDR Notes: CDR timings are in brackets. The Frame Advance (Alan Freeman incognito) track appears on the CDR of Alan Freeman's MEZZOSPHERE. The original timing of the Jack Tamul track was an error!

Compiled by Alan Freeman (1991-1992).

A unique collection of atmospheric/spacious synth and ambient musics.

Due to the nature of such spacious music, this one contains less artists, yet is all pretty much major league prestigious material, presenting the best talents in 90's cosmic music. Naturally, as major innovators of the scene, we have 3 Americans: Rich, Nerell and Roach, all showcasing their talents well. The ever wonderful dark Lightwave represent France admirably, and we have a huge slice of cosmic Schulzian music from Danish maestro Hansen. From Britain, we wanted Kevin O'Neill, but lost contact, however the synth and flute duo of Steve & Linda Hillman fitted-in nicely.

CDR notes: CDR timings are in brackets. To fit an 83 minute cassette on a CDR 80, some pruning was needed, so some of the fades are shortened, making for a cleaner product with less tape-hiss.

All tracks recorded in the living room, at our flat, St. Stephens Road, Highfields, Leicester (January-March 1983). Recompilation, mix and editing by Alan Freeman, in my bedroom (1-9 December 2007), largely from the "Multum In Parvo" compilation.

Volume 13 of the Auricle Archive series, inc. CD-Rom.

Back in our real early exploratory days, before we had any instruments, we issued a number of pretty low-fi and/or crudely produced cassettes that are best left in obscurity. In fact many of those tapes are now lost altogether. Of what remains, much of the best was issued in the original Auricle Archive, excepting a largely very good "various artists" album called MULTUM IN PARVO (Latin for "Many different things in the same place") and two other such samplers ILLUMINATED PLEASURES and A BREEZE OF TIME, all of which contain excellent material undocumented elsewhere.

MULTUM IN PARVO was a c90 cassette, and has remarkably survived 24 years with very little decay. Largely a pretty good example of our primordial experimentation, I decided not to do a straight reissue, as some of the material on side two of the cassette was a mite too crude to be worthy of inclusion. Also, as one of the Region 5 tracks had serious drop-out (and a version of that is documented elsewhere) and a couple of others I could edit down to much more cohesive works, I decided on this release, also featuring Peter Harrison's very nice spot on the Inkey$ 8 cassette magazine.

Listening back to this old material nowadays, I'm surprised to realise there is a continuity of single-mindedness in the way we have made music over the years, with certain collage techniques still being key to the way we make music today. Back then though we had no instruments. All the electronics were done with an old ITT cassette recorder, wiring the inputs to the outputs via our hands! Yes, depending on how hard you grabbed the wires, how loud the levels and tone controls were, and how much you were sweating (!) it all had an influence on the sound produced, resulting in weird chugging and whirring sounds mostly. Also, home made cassette loops, tapes at wrong speeds and played in broken machines that would stutter.

Blatant plagiarism was also part of our art, with hand wound turntables a favourite instrument of the time. Actually, all the material involved in the early Region 5 recordings is from LP records, obscure bits of synth music, bits of weird library records, etc. Amazingly all this was done without any mixing equipment, by recording to one cassette recorder and then playing that back together with a second layer, and so on. So, if you recognise anything in the recordings on this disc it could well be what you think it is. Most obvious are bits of Stockhausen's HYMNEN and the flute of Bob Downes. Alan Freeman (11 December 2007)

A prime historical artifact from our early days. Way back then we published a number of samplers and "various artists" releases on cassette that were neither really, in that all the material was by ourselves, in various combinations and different concepts (true) but really we were just trying to give the impression that it was just more than Steve and myself (Alan) involved. Most of these projects were later consolidated as Alto Stratus, and the ZBB (Zircon & The Burning Brains) project became a separate entity as a trio.

Another historical long lost cassette document made available again. "A Breeze Of Time" was a kind of sampler with a lot of rare and/or alternative material, intended as a good intro, an ideal starter to for the newcomer. Long deleted and lost to the world, I revisited it when compiling the original Auricle Archive, and used two tracks: Alto Stratus - Troll and Region 5 - Reise (remix) which I decided to omit here, as there's no use in duplication. After all, 72 minutes is great value by anyone's standards!
