Location Profile:
ANGEL, CITY ROAD
& OLD STREET |

| Three locations in one here encompassing a complete
section of the Northern Line (Bank Branch) which appears in 'Epping'. |
 |
 |
We start our little journey at Old Street, one of
the Northern Line's less well known stations and an interchange for the
former Northern City Branch now run as part of the National Rail network. |
| The very drab 1960's grey tiled platforms are
reflected in the equally uninspiring surface entrances - a few subway access
points beneath a soulless roundabout. Not
exactly inspiring is it? |
 |
 |
Head north from Old Street and you will come across
the old City Road station. Today a fragment of the former station
building remains, now in use as a ventilation shaft.
At track level the old platforms are just about visible
in the dark from the windows of a passing train. |
| The station entrance at Angel was moved in the early
1990's into Islington High Street when the decrepit lifts were replaced by
escalators.
The street outside is little more than a traffic
congested race track these days. |
 |
 |
This is the modern entrance opened in the early
1990's. It plays a key part in one scene in 'Epping' as do the
platforms below ground. |
| The platform level is reached by way of the longest
escalators on the entire Underground network.
The northbound platform seen here was built in the
early 1990's as well to replace the old two track island platform that was
becoming overcrowded and dangerous. |
 |
 |
The southbound platform tunnel is the original, its
unusual width being due to it having originally hosted both tracks either
side of a narrow island platform. Overcrowding
problems saw the complete rebuilding of the station with a new northbound
platform as seen above |
