Location Profile:
BAKER STREET |

 |
Baker Street as immortalised by the likes of Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (whose iconic silhouette decorates much of the station) and of
course the well known song by Gerald Raffety, is a very complex station indeed, playing
host to the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City, Circle, Jubilee and Bakerloo lines. |
 |
 |
| The oldest part of the station are platforms five and
six (very logical!) which serve the sub-surface Hammersmith & City and Circle Lines. The twin track arched roof platform is the oldest section of passenger
underground railway in the world.
It's also very dark, hence the rather gloomy images - sorry about
that! |
 |
 |
| The Metropolitan Lines onwards towards Wembley Park
and Harrow veer sharply northwards from the Circle Line a very short distance before the
platforms shown above left. The curvature of the middle two
platforms is obvious in this view whilst out of sight on either side are the bay platforms
for terminating services. |
 |
The newest section is that occupied by the Jubilee Line although
part of this was merely converted from the Stanmore Branch of the much older Bakerloo
Line. The northbound Jubilee Line platform is seen above right and shows the typical
late 1970's styling prevalent on all of the original Jubilee Line stations south of here
as far as Green Park (plus the now closed Charing Cross part). The exterior of the station (shown left although there are alternative side
entrances) is impressive and fronts onto the very busy and traffic infested Marylebone
Road.
The series has passed through Baker Street briefly before but a key
plot event occurs here in Embankment so it was time the station was showcased properly. |
| Baker Street is also home to the famous London
Transport Lost Property Office.
This can be found around the corner from the front
entrance of the station in the northern half of Baker Street itself and is
next to where it once was (note the remains of the old 'Lost Property'
lettering above the adjacent newsagents. |
