Location Profile:
LOUGHTON & DEBDEN |

A trip up the Central Line to briefly take a look at a
couple of the stations on the very rural Woodford to Epping section.
 |
Loughton appears in the series very briefly in
'Lewisham' and may appear again in future episodes |
| Unlike many of the stations of the Central Line's
Essex branches, Loughton was rebuilt in a very 1930's classis art deco style
with two island platforms. It along with other
stations on this section have recently benefited from a major refurbishment
and are now among the best presented stations on the Underground. |

One stop up from Loughton and you reach Debden.
This is very much a station with little traffic in the daytime, serving
mainly the small town and the adjacent industrial estates. |
| Debden does not feature in the series just yet but I
do have some ideas for this location. The
platform buildings and recently renovated original footbridge are much in
the same style as when built by the Great Eastern Railway, long before the
Central Line took over in the 1940's. |
 |
 |
The station building is not exactly what you would
call architecturally interesting though.... |
|
So quiet was the station on the Saturday morning I
visited that the only other passenger on the platform was this local who was
taking more than a passing interest in the dubious refreshments on offer!! |

 |
Another shot that emphasises how quiet this rural
backwater of the network can be is this interior view of my train to Epping.
Almost completely empty from Woodford northwards.
This is standard Central Line 1992 type Tube Stock
with original interior which is now starting to look a bit tired in places. |
