Marble Arch is one of the row of three tourist
trap stations (the others being Bond Street, Oxford Circus
and Tottenham Court Road) which provide access to the busy thoroughfare of Oxford Street.
 |
The arch itself can be seen at the top end of Park Lane but
largely goes unnoticed by many passers by who are more interested in access the western
end of Oxford Street and the top of Park Lane. |
| Confused tourists, buses, coaches, taxis and even the occasional
horse drawn carriage all contribute to the general traffic chaos in and around the area.
On the right, by pure chance I was able to capture an image of one of the Royal
carriages passing (albeit empty). |

 |
The west end of Oxford Street is right outside the station and is
also the point where Park Lane, Edgware Road and the traffic from Bayswater, Notting Hill
gate and points west all meet in the usual traffic chaos that for some reason is more
chronic on a Saturday than a week day. |
| The station at Marble Arch, served solely by the Central Line wins
no awards by any stretch of the imagination. The only main entrance is this one
located on the north side of Oxford Street which features one of those nasty faded 1980's
plastic canopies. As seems to be standard these days, the
miniscule entrance is swamped with the usual street clutter of confused tourists, booths
and those silent blokes holding large signs that Westminster Council is about to have a
large purge on. |

 |
Once you pass through the cramped ticket hall which is also fed by
several passageways of the totally unfathomable Marble Arch/Park Lane pedestrian underpass
system, you reach the Central Line platforms. I am not sure
exactly what the various designs on the platform around the roundels are supposed to be
about but it probably seemed like a good idea at the time.... |
