Location Profile:
DOWNING STREET, WHITEHALL
& THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT |

 |
Probably one of the most famous streets if not in the UK then
certainly in London is of course Downing Street, the very seat of Government. It is up this hallowed street that the Commander walks when he is
summoned
to the most famous address in the City of Westminster. |
| The irony of Downing Street is that in these days of so called
'Open Government' the nearest anyone can get to it is the rather tacky wrought iron gates
that were installed in the late 1980's. Prior to that,
anyone within reason was allowed to walk along its length but that's progress for you I
suppose.... |
 |
 |
Of course the security measures in place mean that the only way I
have been able to illustrate the UK's most famous front door is by finding an image from
elsewhere on the Internet! Whilst in the novel, the Commander
is allowed through this hallowed door without any question, I think the chances of me
walking down this legendary street are all but zero!
Well I can dream can't I? |

The main street of power in Central London is Parliament Street
and Whitehall which plays host to Downing Street, the Treasury and a significant number of
Government Departments. |
| Above left is another view of Downing Street's formidable iron
gates whilst above right is the home of the Ministry of Defence. Whitehall itself is a little island of green with significant numbers of
trees lining its length (and blocking the camera's view of various ministerial buildings
as well!) |

A building that should require no introduction is the impressive
Palace of Westminster or if you prefer, Houses of Parliament, the very seat of Government
on the rare occasion that they are not on holiday that is. Westminster
marks the second appearance for the Houses of Parliament in the series after its brief
appearance in Hainault. |
