Protecting the beautiful Vale
There is not much woodland in the Vale. But the Trust has kindly been given a beautiful woodland in Bishampton by Lionel & Margaret Wilkes. They planted this plot of land 20 years ago in memory of their son, Ian, and it is now known as Ian's Wood. This will be kept as woodland, with minimal intervention.
We also have 3 acres of a steep sloped scrub area, mainly hawthorn and ash, but with 6 magnificent oak trees, around 200 years old each one. We are trying to control the scrub to see what grassland seed may still germinate - the scrub is less than 20 years old and before this it was a grazed meadow. This land joins with our flood meadows at Offenham.
Any trees that need to be taken out (diseased, to clear a path or ride, or a non-native species) are corded, piled for two years, then logged and burned on the log stove in the office.
