There are three plum orchards on Hipton Hill, two of which have been partially grubbed up. They were planted up in the 1940s and ‘50s, as standard trees, but as commercial orchards. We believe Hipton Hill now represents 0.1 % of England’s remaining traditional standard orchards.
Visible from Greenhill, Evesham, it is VLHT’s largest reserve at 70 acres.
Butterfly, Pyramidal, Spotted and Bee orchids are present in large numbers. The grassland is to be restored by sheep grazing, the gaps in the rows to be replanted with apples, pears and plums to create different types of orchards over time.
It was opened officially by Jonathon Porritt CBE on May 2nd 2008, following a celebration of the purchase with Church Lench First School planting 6 trees. Jonathon is an expert in sustainable development, and with this in mind, we will endeavour to make Hipton a sustainable producer of local produce.
