SWAN 2ND ETHSTRITHSON
KING OF DENMARK 1047 - 1074

Swan II Drowning

Illustration from
A 13th Century
Manuscript.

1045. Bishop Brihtwold passed away, Heremann the king's chaplain received the bishopric. This year Wialfric hallowed abbot of St. Augustine's Canterbury, at Christmas on St. Stephen's Day, by the king's leave and abbot Aelfstan's because of his infirmity. Edward gathered a great ship-force on Sandwich because of the threat of Magnus of Norway; but his war with SWAN in Denmark prevented him from coming here.

1046. Eorl SWAN went into Wales, Gruflfydd the northern king with him, and hostages were given them. When he was on his way homeward, he had fetched to him the abbess of Leominster, and kept her while it pleased him, then let her go home. This same year, Osgood Clapa was outlawed, before midwinter. This year after Candlemas came the hard winter with frost, snow and all bad weather, such that no man then alive might remember so hard a winter as that was, in human death and cattle-death, and birds and fish died in the great cold and famine. Bishop Lifing, the wise speaker, passed away on March 23rd. He had three bishoprics, one in Devonshire, and in Cornwall and Worcester. Leofric succeeded to Devonshire and Cornwall and bishop Aldred to Worcester. Osgood the staller was outlawed. Magnus conquered Denmark.

Bishop Grimcytel passed away; he was bishop to Sussex, and lies in Christchurch in Canterbury, Edward gave Heca, his priest, that bishopric. In this same year bishop Aelfwine passed away on August 29th, and King Edward gave bishop Stigand that bishopric. Abbot Aethelstan in Abingdon passed away on March 29th. Easter Day was on April 23rd; there was throughout all England very much death that same year. SWAN sent hither, and asked for help against Magnus, king of Norway, that fifty ships should be sent to his aid; but it seemed bad counsel to all folk, and it was abandoned because Magnus had a great fleet of ships. He then drove SWAN out, and with much slaughter of men won that land. The Danes yielded him much money and they received him as king; that same year, Magnus passed away.
SWAN came back to Denmark, and Harold, Magnus' paternal uncle, went to Norway after Magnus was dead, and the Norsemen received him; he sent here to make peace with this land. There was also an earthquake on May 1st, in many places, in Worcester, Droitwich, Derby and elsewhere. There was also much death among men and cattle, and the wildfire did much evil to Derbyshire and elsewhere.
