John & Margaret Swan 1531

These two wills are those of Stephen’s son John and daughter-in-law Margaret who both died of The Plague in 1531, ten years before Stephen’s own death.

In the name of God Amen. This day of September in the year of our Lord, One thousand five hundred and thirty one. I JOHN SWAN of Ickleton in the diocese of Ely being of good mind and memory make this my testament and last will in this manner. First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God to our Lady saint Mary and to all the saints in heaven. And my body to be buried in the said churchyard of Ickleton aforesaid. Item, I give to the High Alter of the parish church for my tythes negligently forgotten xvd. To the (Sopulite) Light xvd. To the Roode Light xvd. To our Lady Light xvd. The residue of my goods my duty paid and discharged. I put into the disposal of Margaret my wife and STEPHEN SWAN my father whom I make mine executor of this my last will and they always to use for the benefit of my children.
