Recording began in 1998 at map reference ST 323203 not far from the Village Green. The equipment consists of:
A louvred screen with a maximum thermometer, minimum thermometer and a wet and dry bulb whirling hygrometer for measuring humidity.
A Snowdon pattern rain gauge.
A barograph.
A sunshine recorder
An anemometer for continuous recording of wind speed and maximum gust speed given in m.p.h., knots and on the Beaufort scale. There is also continuous recording of wind direction.
Manual observations are made daily at 0900 hours and include estimates of cloud cover and visibility. Logged observations are fed into a computer and can be viewed on the screen or printed out for various time periods. An example is shown at the end.

Newspapers are showing pictures of the dessicated farmland of East Anglia after a very dry spring. Taking the three months March, April and May the rainfall totals have been:
2007 - 173mm; 2008 - 201mm; 2009 - 97 mm, 2010 - 104mm; 2011 - 57mm.
This low figure for 2011 will have implications for reservoirs which are now below normal capacity and feed for farm animals is already highly priced.
There have been no dramatic changes in atmospheric pressure, the only frontal system occurring between the 6t - 8th inclusive and giving a total of 19.6mm of rain. May was frequently unusually windy and, except for the first 5 days, from a westerly quarter.

An exceptionally warm and dry month. [cf. 6.59mm in 2007 and 10.6mm 10 2006 but 110mm in 1998 and 161mm in 2000] The mean monthly temperature was more in April 2007 at 11.1°C but April 2011 was very warm during the day. The frost on the night of 27th / 28th (- 2.4°C ) was unwelcome, affecting potato plants. The clean daytime skies gave us unexpectedly warm days. The pressure pattern changed gradually and there were no Atlantic low pressure systems.
