Sculpture inspiration

A SCULPTURE by Sheffield artist Vivien Whitaker is being installed in the About Art section at Western Park Museum. Discovery activities for children are being planned around her and there will be a Meet the Artist talk in March.

Selkie is inspired by the Celtic folk legend of a seal that can change into a human form by shedding it's skin. The story tells of a lonely man entranced by a group of women singing on the seashore. He steals a seal skin, hides it away and persuades the seal woman to become his wife.

Whitaker has been influenced by her family links with the north of Scotland where this legend is told. She has carved selkie from English alabaster, a material that is very rare as all of the mines are now closed.
