I am a sculptor and I delight in directly carving the last of the English Alabaster.
English Alabaster is ancient and aesthetically amazing. I work without a plan, responding to what is in each stone.
Every sculpture is unique; the combination of the rarity of the stone, the complexity of each piece and the aesthetically pleasing shapes will outlast both the maker and the purchaser.
My aim is to create intimate sculpture which draws people into relationship with this exquisite, soon to be extinct, element.
When Victoria Firth, Director of the Lawrence Batley Theatre saw these stone sculptures in my studio, she said
‘Vivien’s work is a rare combination of being thought provoking, beautiful to look at and showing mastery of skill’
