Lecture  Programme 2009/10

Our programme of lectures runs from September to April each year, and lectures are currently held on the
second Wednesday of the month in the Ad Lib Library building in Drury Lane, starting at 7.30 pm.

In its 120 year history the Diocese has seen drives to increase the number of churches followed by the problems resulting from over-large and expensive buildings, diminishing congregations and a shortage of clergy.

The Road to Fotheringhay.
550 years ago Richard, Duke of York was killed at the battle of Wakefield. Seventeen years later his son, now Edward IV, arranged a sumptuous funeral procession from Pontefract to Fotheringhay. This talk explores the turbulent history of those years and of the 100 mile route of the procession.
This is a joint meeting with Wakefield Civic Society

Using examples predominantly from the west of the county, we investigate how land was enclosed from the moors and turned into a vibrant agricultural landscape.

Note that this year, all excursions arranged by the Historical Society and the Civic Society are open to members of either organisation
and their guests. A coach will be available at a cost of £l2.00 per person for all the full day events.
During the summer months a programme of visits, both whole day, and evening, are arranged for our members
