TRADITIONAL CRAFT BOOKBINDING IN THE
“TOWN OF BOOKS”
The
Black Mountains Bindery is a small craft bookbinding shop located in
Hay-on-Wye, the world famous “town of books” at the foot of the picturesque
Black
Mountains
on the border between England and Wales.
It was established about Easter 2004 by Chris Bradshaw, a bookbinder
who came to Hay in 1997 after running a similar small bindery in Norfolk for seven years. The shop was featured on the October 2005 episode of
the BBC’s Flog it TV series.
The Bindery offers:
REBINDING,
REPAIR AND RESTORATION OF OLD BOOKS. Treasured
volumes, antiquarian books, family Bibles etc., that have become worn or
broken, can be repaired using matching leather or cloth so as to become as
sound as if they were new.
Alternatively if the old binding is completely worn out, the book
can be completely rebound in a style sympathetic to the period.
ONE-OFF BINDINGS
FOR SPECIAL BOOKS. If you have a particular book that
you would like to see in a unique gold-tooled leather binding, or perhaps a
selection of your own poems or family memoirs that you wish to have bound

HAND-BOUND SKETCH-BOOKS, JOURNALS,
ALBUMS etc. In addition to
repairing and restoring old books, the Black Mountains Bindery also offers
a range of quality hand-made sketch-books, note-books, blank journals,
albums and portfolios, all made on the premises from the best acid-free
materials and decorated with attractive hand-marbled papers. These can be personalised with your
initials, or any lettering of your choice, in gold, and make ideal and
long-lasting gifts.
ALSO:
The Bindery has a small selection of rebound books for sale
in the shop, as well as a small stock of secondhand books for sale on book
design, the book crafts, typography, book collecting etc. Books on these subjects are also bought.
The Bindery is located in Oxford
Terrace, Hay-on-Wye, up the hill from Kilvert’s Hotel, next door to the
launderette and very close to the town’s main car park and bus stop.
