Sirdar Tuscany   (57% polyester, 38% acrylic, 5% nylon), shade 0661 Jasper

14 [ 14: 15: 16: 17: 18: 19: 19: 20: 21 ]x 50g balls. Note: If a longer dress length is required, add one extra ball for every 10cm added length.

1 pair 8mm needles

1 pair 6½ mm needles

1 x 60cm 6½ mm circular knitting needle (optional - for neckband).

Stitch holder

Note: Yarn amounts given are based on average requirements and are approximate.

 

Tension

11.5 sts and 15.5 rows to 10cm using 8mm needles over st st.

Use larger or smaller needles if necessary to obtain correct tension.

 

Special notes

Knit side is used as right side.

 

Special abbreviations

CF: centre front

LF: left front

m1: Increase 1 st by picking up the loop lying between the stitches on the right and left needles, and knit into the back of it.

m1p: Increase 1 st by picking up the loop lying between the stitches on the right and left needles, and purl into the back of it.

RF: right front

RS: right side

tbl: through back of loops

wrp1: yarn fwd, sl 1st, yarn back, return slipped st to left hand needle, turn work. When the wrapped st is eventually worked, put the tip of the right hand needle through the wrap and the st and knit (or purl as appropriate) the two loops together.

Cast on 27[29: 29: 31: 33: 33: 35: 37: 39: 39] sts. Starting with k1, work 4 rows in single rib (k1, p1).

Next row: Rib 4sts, k2tog[k2tog: k1: k1: k2tog: k1: k1: k2tog: k2tog: k1], k to end (26[28: 29: 31: 32: 33: 35: 36: 38: 39]sts).

Next row: P to last 4 sts, rib to end.

Next row: Rib 4sts, k to end.

Repeat these last two rows four more times.

Next row: P to last 4 sts, rib to end.

Break off yarn and leave sts on a spare needle.

Right side

Cast on 27[29: 29: 31: 33: 33: 35: 37: 39: 39]sts. Starting with k1, work 4 rows in single rib (k1, p1).

Next row: K to last 6 sts, k2tog tbl[k2tog tbl: k2: k2: k2tog tbl: k2: k2: k2tog tbl: k2tog tbl: k2], rib to end (26[28: 29: 31: 32: 33: 35: 36: 38: 39]sts).

Next row: Rib 4 sts, p to end.

Next row: K to last 4 sts, rib to end.

Repeat these last two rows four more times.

Next row: Rib 4 sts, p to end.

Next row: K to last 4 sts, rib to last st. Slip this st. Transfer the sts for the left side to the left hand needle. Slip the last st of the right side back to the left hand needle and knit this st together with the first st of the left side, rib three, knit to end (51[55: 57: 61: 63: 65: 69: 71: 75: 77] sts).

Next row (WS): Starting with a purl row, continue in stst only until work measures 38cm or until desired measurement (12cm below waistline).

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, k to last three sts, k2tog, k1.

Stst five rows.

Repeat the last six rows twice more (45[49: 51: 55: 57: 59: 63: 65: 69: 71]sts).

Change to 6.5mm needles and continue in stst for six rows.

Change to 8mm needle and continue in stst for a further 14cm (22 rows).

Continue in stst for a further 9 rows.

Shape armhole

Next row: P1, p2 tog, p to last three sts, p2tog tbl, p1.

Repeat the last two rows one more time.

Next row: Purl.

Repeat the last two rows 0[0: 1: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2: 4: 4] more times (33[35: 35: 37: 39: 41: 43: 45: 45: 47]sts).

Continue in stst for 6[6: 6: 4: 6: 6: 8: 8: 6: 6] rows without further shaping.

Divide for neck

Next row: K 15[ 15: 15: 16: 16: 17: 18: 19: 19: 20 ] sts. Continue on these sts only to complete right side.

Next row: P1, p2tog, p to end.

Next row: K1, m1, k to last three sts, k2tog, k1.

Next row: P1, p2tog, p to end.

Cast off.

With RS facing, transfer centre 3[5: 5: 5: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7] sts to a stitch holder, join in yarn and knit to end.

Next row: Purl to last three sts, p2tog tbl, p1.

Next row: K1, k2 tog tbl, k to last st, m1, k1.

Front

Cast on 51[55: 57: 61: 63: 65: 69: 71: 75: 77] sts. Starting with k1, work four rows in k1, p1 rib. Change to  stst and starting with a knit row, continue in stst until work measures 38cm or until desired measurement (12cm below waistline).

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, k to last three sts, k2tog, k1.

Stst five rows.

Repeat the last six rows twice more (45[49: 51: 55: 57: 59: 63: 65: 69: 71sts).

Change to 6.5mm needles and continue in stst for six rows.

Change to 8mm needle and continue in stst for a further 13cm (20 rows).

Bust shaping (short rows)

1st short row: K1, m1, k to last 3[4: 4: 5: 3: 3: 4: 5: 6: 6] sts, wrp, turn.

2ndshort row: P to last 3[4: 4: 5: 3: 3: 4: 5: 6: 6 ] sts, wrp, turn.

3rd short row: K to last 6[7: 7: 8: 7: 7: 8: 9: 10: 10 ] sts, wrp, turn.

4th short row: P to last 6[7: 7: 8: 7: 7: 8: 9: 10: 10 ] sts, wrp, turn.

Stst 7[5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 3: 3] rows.

Next row: K1, m1, k to last st, m1, k1.

Repeat the last 8[6: 6: 6: 6: 6: 6: 6: 4: 4] rows 3[4: 4: 5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 7: 7] more times (39[41: 43: 45: 47: 47: 49: 49: 53: 53] sts).

Continue in sts with no further shaping for 9[11: 11: 5: 5: 5: 5: 5: 9: 9] rows.

Shape armhole

Cast off 2[3: 3: 3: 3: 3: 4: 4: 4: 4] sts at beginning of next two rows.

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, k to last three sts, k2 tog, k1.

Repeat the last two rows one more time.

Shape cap

Repeat these last two rows 5[5: 5: 3: 4: 4: 4: 4: 4: 4] more times.

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, k to last three sts, k2 tog, k1.

Next row: P1, p2tog, purl to last three sts, p2tog tbl, p1.

Repeat last two rows 1[1: 1: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2: 2] more times.

Cast off remaining 5sts.

 

Neckband (knitted in the round – instructions for flat knitting given below)

Join left and right shoulders.

With 6½ mm circular needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 38[38: 40: 40: 42: 42: 44: 44: 46: 46] sts along left front neck, put a marker (CF) on the needle, knit the centre front st, pick up and knit 38[38: 40: 40: 42: 42: 44: 44: 46: 46 ]sts along right front neck, 14sts along right back neck, knit 3[5: 5: 5: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7]sts of centre back, pick up and knit 14sts from left back neck ( 108[110: 114: 114: 120: 120: 124: 124: 128: 128] sts). Put marker on needle.

Establishment round: *K1, p1, repeat from * 13[13: 14: 14: 15: 15: 16: 16: 17: 17] more times, place marker (LF) on needle, (k1, p1) five times, slip CF marker, k1, (p1, k1) five times, place marker (RF) on needle, starting with p1, rib to end.

Round 1: Rib to LF marker, slip marker,  k2tog tbl, rib to two sts before CF marker, p2tog, slip marker, k1, p2tog, rib to two sts before RF marker, k2 tog, slip RF marker, rib to the end.

Round 2: Rib to LF marker, slip marker, k1, keeping rib correct, rib to one st before CF marker, p1, slip marker, k1, p1, keeping rib correct, rib to one st before RF marker, k1, slip marker, rib to end.

Round 3: As round 2.

Round 4: As round 2.

Repeat the last four rounds two more times.

Cast off: Cast off in rib to LF marker, remove marker, k2tog tbl, cast off the previous st, continue casting off in rib to two sts before CF marker, p2tog and cast off , remove marker, k1and cast off, p2tog and cast off, cast off in rib to two sts before RF marker, k2 tog and cast off, remove RF marker, cast off in rib to the end.

 

Neckband (knitted flat)

Join right shoulder.

With 6½ mm needle and RS facing, pick up and knit 38[38: 40: 40: 42: 42: 44: 44: 46: 46 ] sts along left front neck, put a marker (CF) on the needle, knit the centre front st, pick up and knit 38[38: 40: 40: 42: 42: 44: 44: 46: 46 ]sts along right front neck, 14 sts along right back neck, knit 3[5: 5: 5: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7: 7 ]sts of centre back, pick up and knit 15sts from left back neck ( 109[111: 115: 115: 121: 121: 125: 125: 129: 129] sts).

Establishment row: *P1, k1, repeat from * 29[30: 31: 31: 33: 33: 34: 34: 35: 35] more times, place marker (LF) on needle, (p1, k1) five times, p1 (CF st), slip CF marker, (k1, p1) five times, place marker (RF) on needle, starting with k1, rib to end.

Row 1: Rib to LF marker, slip marker,  k2tog tbl, rib to two sts before CF marker, p2tog, slip marker, k1, p2tog, rib to two sts before RF marker, k2 tog, slip RF marker, rib to the end.

Row 2 (WS): Rib to RF marker, slip marker, p1, keeping rib correct, rib to two sts before CF marker, k1, p1, slip marker, k1, keeping rib correct, rib to one st before LF marker, p1, slip marker, rib to end.

Row 3: Rib to LF marker, slip marker, k1, keeping rib correct, rib to one st before CF marker, p1, slip marker, k1, p1, rib to one st before RF marker, k1, slip RF marker, rib to the end.

Row 4: As row 2.

Repeat the last four rows two more times.

Cast off: Cast off in rib to LF marker, remove marker, k2tog tbl, cast off the previous st, continue casting off in rib to two sts before CF marker, p2tog and cast off, remove marker, k1and cast off, p2tog and cast off, cast off in rib to two sts before RF marker, k2 tog and cast off, remove RF marker, cast off in rib to the end. Join left shoulder and neckband seam.

 

To make up

Join side seams.

Join sleeve seams and fit sleeve into armhole.

Oversew top of slit to secure.
