Described by Deborah Newton (designer and former Technical Editor of Vogue Knitting) as a "wonderful knitter", Judy is a graduate of the University of Glasgow and worked for a number of top International designers, before making the inevitable transition to designing in her own right. Private commissions and work for various magazines quickly followed, as did commissions to design for a range of commercial spinners and, most recently, for "Knitting Magazine". A glance at the wide variety of styles, yarns and textures that feature in her work (see the Portfolio Pages) clearly demonstrates the depth, breadth and clarity of her own unique insight and approach to hand knits. Drawing on the full, rich palette of traditional designs and techniques, her garments exemplify her vision, be they fashionable and contemporary, classic or a fusion of them all, with that additional special Judy touch. Argyle, intarsia and Icelandic sit beside circular knitting and Fair Isle, in designs in lace weight to mohair and everything in between. Though computer literate and happy to make use of IT whenever appropriate, Judy feels that the design process is far too personal to be left to algorithms and software - never being happier than with the buzz of a new idea in her head and crayons and paper pad in her hands! Each stitch, every increase or decrease has been quite literally thought through and individually contemplated - not generated by soul-less computer code - and the difference shows in the vibrant life and eminent wear-ability of her designs. In many ways it is this desire to produce knits that are both readily made and wearable by real people that is the key to Judy's approach. In addition to her hand knitting work, Judy also designs and produces a variety of hand-woven products in her customary British wools and other luxury fibres. Exclusive items, lovingly hand made in the beautiful, rugged north of Scotland and only available through a very small number of carefully selected outlets, a touch of luxury awaits.................... The Orcadian Collection is exclusively available from The Workshop on the beautiful island of South Ronaldsay (Orkney Islands) and Judy's work is now also available from the Historic Scotland Visitor Centre at Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, Duff House, the Boyndie Trust, Soy Kilts and at Aberdeen International Airport. Characterised by meticulous attention to detail, blending the very best of age-old Scottish tradition with a modern designer's eye for quality, individually selected fibres, her knitwear and woven goods represent some of the finest examples of contemporary Scottish design and craft.
