The Edinburgh Press Club occupies premises at the West End of the city's famous Princes Street, at No. 19 Rutland Street. We share the street with the Caledonian Hilton Hotel (without which we would have a glorious view of the castle), are a five minute stroll from the Usher Hall, the Sheraton Hotel, and the International Conference Centre. Murrayfield Stadium awaits, a mere twenty minutes walk away.
The Club, formed in 1939, was located in the Old Town, at Candlemaker's Row, between Historic Greyfriar's Churchyard and the world famous Greyfriar's Bobby statue. The premises (rented from Edinburgh Corporation for the sum of £35 per year) were opened officially on January 19th, 1945 by Lord Provost John Falconer, who joined Lord Rosebery in signing the visitors' book.
At the first AGM in the City Chambers on April 5th,1946, (there being no AGM's during the war) the President, Sir George Waters, expressed the hope that the Club would "become the centre of sweetness and light." The Press Club proved so popular that larger premises were soon required, and 19 Rutland Street was opened by Lord Provost Sir Andrew Murray on July 15th, 1950.
As befits the Press Club of Scotland's Capital city, the Club has a Coat of Arms, 'with ensigns armorial', matriculated by the Lord Lyon, King of Arms. The emblem features a golden quill, feathered 'bendways', above a triple-turreted castle, beflagged.
Honorary Members include HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Rt. Hon. Sir David Steel
KBE MSP (Ret'd), Sir Sean Connery, Rt. Hon. Michael Heseltine, and Kate Adie.
The late Alistair Cooke was an Honorary Member for many years.
